IKE all pubs you would expect the Royal and Ancient to be packed full of spirits.

But the Colne Bridge drinking spot is becoming just as well known for its spirits of the paranormal variety – as it is supposed to be one of Yorkshire’s most haunted pubs.

Staff and customers have reported seeing ghostly figures, items moving without explanation and light bulbs constantly blowing.

And now ghost hunters are set to spend tonight at the Dalton Bank Road pub to discover if the spooky goings on are for real – or the result of a few too many pints.

Leading the team is married father of two and experienced paranormal investigator Mike McLeod.

Halifax-based Mike travels all over the country investigating the unexplained and turned his attention to the pub after learning about its gruesome history.

The pub sits opposite the former site of Atkinson’s Mill, which was devastated by fire in January 1818 after someone dropped a candle in a basket of cotton.

Eighteen children aged between nine and 18 perished in the blaze.

Their badly burnt corpses were placed in the pub’s cellar, which acted as a temporary morgue before the children were moved to Kirkheaton cemetery.

It is believed that the spirits of the children haunt the pub, together with an aggressive former landlord named Mr Black.

Mike said: “It is listed as one of Yorkshire’s most haunted pubs.

“There have been a few accounts from people who say they have seen things.

“The spirits are said to be quite mischievous and the last paranormal investigation there came up with some interesting results.

“But there were no pictures of anything so we’re going to go in with our equipment and see if we can get something on film.”
