Maya-Rose Nash sits behind a desk in her store on South Broadway. The room is warm and a nice respite from the cold, and the smell of incense fills the air. Nash’s store Mind Over Matter has been nestled in this spot for over eight years.
"My mother always told me, from a young age, that I had a gift," Nash explained. "'But don’t tell anyone, they will think you are weird,' she used to say."
Many years later she came out of the broom closet, as Nash puts it. But it wasn’t easy coming out.
"You don’t want to be the only witch at the PTA," she explained. "I was not raised with psychics, hippies or artists. I was raised very mainstream, a construction worker father and a proper, Catholic, British-war-bride mother."
Now, Nash is the author of four books: The Magic Within, A Modern Day Book of Simples, Fairy Play and Tea-Ology: A Guide To All Things Tea. She will have a new book out this fall called Journey—The Tarot. Nash has appeared at Madison Square Garden, The New York Renaissance Faire, Nyack First Night and several corporate events. She has seven children and eleven grandchildren. Her card reads "Psychic Readings and Intuitive Coaching."
The early years
Nash spent a lot of time alone as a young teen, reading books about people with the same gifts—and she realized that she wasn’t crazy after all. Nash and her younger brother made Ouija boards out of glass.
"You have to be very careful with Ouija Boards," she advised. "I never recommend that anyone own one; you are not just contacting 'Aunt Millie' with them, you are opening a portal to the other side and sometimes these spirits will not leave."
Maya began in radio as a frequent guest on the Steve and Sophia Show on WRCR am 1300 Radio Rockland. She would do live readings and had her own show, "The Maya Nash Show."
"My husband became ill and was looking for a different line of work, so I went down to the radio station with him," she said, explaining her start in radio. "The interviewer took one look at me and said 'what do you do?' I told him I was a psychic and he said you must speak to the morning host, he hates psychics."
Not swayed by the negativity and always up for a challenge, Nash went to meet the station manager. He told her that his keys were missing for two years and if she could find them, she had a job.
"I saw a box and pick-up trucks," Nash said, explaining a vision. She went back the next day, but the host said he didn’t have a pick-up truck—and was not a believer of this lady self-professed clairvoyant with long blond hair.
Later that day the manager's daughter went into a closet and found a box filled with photos of her boyfriend’s pick-up truck—and the two-years-lost keys. Nash had a new job.
It works on animals, too
Angel Landers has been a loyal client of Nash’s for several years. Sitting with Nash one day, she shared that she was very troubled about her new dog. "Bring the dog in next time," Nash said.
On her next visit Landers came in with Flapjack, a shepherd/beagle rescue dog. Flapjack took a lap around the place, sniffed a few crystals and settled on Lander’s lap. As soon as Nash began flipping the Tarot cards, Flapjack seemed intrigued.
"It was very strange,†Landers said. "He was very focused on the cards."
Nash then told Landers that the dog’s previous name was Lucy, and that she didn’t like being called Lucy. As soon as Flapjack heard her old name, her tail immediately stopped wagging.
"I almost fell over that Maya knew Flapjack’s old name—I never told her," Landers said. "I knew right there and then that Maya was genuine for sure."
What questions are people asking?
"I have heard many different questions asked lately," Nash explained. "It's not all about romance or spiritual growth. People want to know when they are getting a job, if they are losing their house, if they are getting divorced."
Want the answers? Or just better luck? Nash can help. She advises if you wish to sell your home, put a dollar bill over the door jamb facing in—money will follow. Or clean the stale energy by re-arranging furniture and getting organized. (Sounds like a pragmatic psychic to me.)
"Make a mixture of nutmeg and olive oil (prosperity oil) and wash your doorway with it," Nash added. She also sells Flip That House Spell Kits for those who want to try their hand at aiding their own property sale with a spell.
"If someone comes into the store for a reading and they have a lot of negative energy, I take my sage leaves [called Smudging, which is an old Native American ritual] and go out onto Broadway and release all the bad energies," Nash continued.
Merging the supernatural and Valentine's Day
For Valentine’s Day, Nash's Wishing Poppet’s that she sells in Mind Over Matter is a great gift. It is like the not-so-politically correct Voodoo doll of older generations. It has enchanted herbs in its stuffing and rose quartz over its heart. But this doll is for white magic spells only: focus on the qualities you are seeking in a partner, use a red pen to draw on the Poppet all that you wish, light a few candles, say a few spells and leave your Poppet in a safe and private place until your wishes come true.
