Friday the 13th has many legends and superstitions. Hotels won't have a room number 13. Elevators don't label a floor 13, and even airplanes don't have a row 13. Some people have a fear of keeping their radio volume on 13, as they fear an accident will happen. What causes these superstitions?

One legend holds true that a bad Friday the 13th occurred in 1306. King Philip of France burned the Knights Templar at the stake which marked the day as a day of evil. Christian tradition presumes that the number 13 is unholy because it signifies the gathering of 12 witches and the devil.

Thinking of Friday the 13th reminded me of haunted places in Connecticut you may have experienced paranormal and creepy experiences. One unique location is in Middlebury, CT known as Little People Town. Surrounded by

woods it is hidden from civilians driving by on the main road. It is a small village of detailed and complex stone houses that only stand 3 to 5 feet tall. There is even a thrown built into a rock. Legend has it that if you sit in the thrown you will die in 7 years. Check back for a more detailed article of Little People Town!

In Fairfield, CT Greenfield Hill Mental Institution is a large field with more than 100 large abandoned buildings. These buildings once housed more than 4000 psychologically unstable people. Greenfield Hill Mental Institution was featured on MTV's show Fear, which takes people through the institution in the dark to perform challenges. A camera is attached to each person as they face their fears. This institution was abandoned since the mid 1990s. Beware as it is reported that cops heavily guard the institution for local ghost hunters.

Wallingford has 3 identified haunted locations. First, as you drive down Whirlwind Road you may get spooked. Legend has it that a woman in the 1930s was stood up on her wedding day and left at the alter. She drowned herself in the body of water that runs along the narrow road. Drivers have seen a lady in a white dress on the side of the road or on the stone wall. Tilcon has been reported to be haunted by a man that was killed on the job. Reports include machines turning on by themselves, lanterns carried with no one there, seeing figures of the man, smell of smoke when no one is there, and strobes of lights that were floating around. If you're a resident of Wallingford, CT and have children that attend Moses Y Beach Elementary School I wouldn't share this next story. Moses Y Beach Elementary School was once a high school destroyed by a tornado. Rumor has it that prom or a homecoming was held the night of the tornado. Other rumors are that a child once fell through the roof of the building and that the school was used as a morgue. Believe what you want, there have been strange happenings at the school. Neighbors have heard music and seen lights on in the gym after hours, called police, and upon investigation the disruption would suddenly stop. Other reports include doors opening on their own, hearing footsteps, and opening and closing of drawers.

Cedarcrest Mental Asylum is hidden in the woods next to a currently operating building in Berlin/Wethersfield. The asylum was a sanatorium for tuberculosis established in 1910. Operation was ceased in 1976 for treating chronic disease. It was then used as a psychiatric facility and renamed Cedarcrest Regional Hospital. Currently closed, thrill seekers have visited the abandoned building reporting hearing footsteps, scratching noises, moaning, banging, and overall just a creepy place to visit. Beware as there are security cameras at the operating building nearby and police have often caught those in search of the asylum.

Pine Grove Cemetery in Ansonia has been around used since the 1800s. People have reported hearing children playing, chains, moans, a baby crying, smelt a strong smell of roses, felt warm spots, and seen dark figures guarding the gates to the cemetery.
