Haunted Hotel

The ghost of an old gold-miner named Lyle frequently and playfully haunts our historic gold-rush inn. This gentlemanly spirit occupied room 15 for many years until his death in 1927. His body was discovered with a box of dynamite tucked under his bed - tools of the trade, it was assumed. The box of dynamite is long gone, but Lyle seems to have remained in the pristine comfort of "his" room. Of the seventeen stately rooms in our bed and breakfast inn, our resident ghost typically plays tricks on our staff and guests in or near room 15.

Throughout Lyle's "humanly" stay in our historic hotel, he scoured the now defunct mine located in Spring Gulch, a water source found a few steps from our doors. He apparently did quite well, for he was known as a man with exemplary taste: nothing but the finest when it came to his lodging.

Rumored to have been fastidiously hygienic and an eccentric recluse, Lyle is not particularly fond of finding clutter or women's cosmetics on his dresser. If finds them there, he typically moves them to a nearby sink or knocks them onto the floor. His other mysterious antics include turning lights off and on and off and on, and Lyle often delights in turning the shower water on when no one is looking. He occasionally disappears, perhaps to visit his former girlfriend across the street at the Charlotte Hotel.

Owner/innkeeper, Peggy Mosley, has a collection of paranormal events and ghost sightings compiled from employees and guests and is a spirited storyteller. You can contact Peggy at the Groveland Hotel at 800-273-3314 or 209-962-4000 to hear detailed accounts. Or better yet, make a reservation to experience Lyle for yourself: his room is our most requested!
